Working on a timing belt job the other day and ran across this 25 year old time capsule. Nissan oem thermostats are date stamped for year/month of manufacture... this one is April 1990, stuck cracked open and will not pop at temp. ![](http://www.yugobernie.com/images/Cars/Kevin_P/20150729_123812.jpg)
Broken thermostat was causing tons of system pressure and look at the ballooning of the bypass hoses. ![](http://www.yugobernie.com/images/Cars/Kevin_P/20150729_131402.jpg)
water pump, expired ![](http://www.yugobernie.com/images/Cars/Kevin_P/20150729_141201.jpg)
but this timing belt was so old & dry that you can make it crack in your hands like this. I was able to tear it into about 20 pieces with my bare hands. It was holding on by fairy dust alone. ![](http://www.yugobernie.com/images/Cars/Kevin_P/20150729_143654.jpg)
Oh and a side order of PTU corrosion just to make things interesting. ![](http://www.yugobernie.com/images/Cars/Kevin_P/20150731_094149.jpg)

It's not just the miles/kilometers, it's also the age too. Stay on top of your maintenance schedule. At best these cars are 20 years old and rubber parts don't last forever.
